Hi Everyone! This is an audio chapter excerpt of my latest memoir, Ifẹ. I’ve recorded a sample for everyone to listen to, and the full-length version will be available for paid subscribers. You can also read the chapter text below.
This is my very first audiobook debut! A lot of people have been asking me to do podcast-style things, so I thought I’d give it a whirl, and it felt natural to me. I’d like to do more audio versions for some of my blog posts in the future. If you like this and want to receive more audio content, give this a 💜 and let me know what you think. Enjoy!
I walked back to the party. The cabin lights were delicately muted and replaced by purple, red, and blue spotlights all around the room. A beautiful disco ball hung from the ceiling in the center of the dance floor with a few people standing underneath, chattering away and two-stepping to the house music that was bumping from the speakers.
There was a pole off to the side of the dance floor, to the right of the couch chairs—an 8 ft. tall, thick steel pole that was bolted into the floor and ceiling. It definitely wasn’t the same as the smooth, slender Stainless Steel or Chrome poles that were designed for professional dancers.
Rather, it was a coincidental pole that was integrated into the structure of the cabin, that happened to be suitable enough for me to dance on. Apparently, people loved to have fun with it at dance parties, but I was one of the few who actually knew what to do on that thing. My stomach pitter-pattered with excitement over the thought of showing off my moves.
I was met with oohs and Aahs by Lauren and the DJ. Everyone complimented my look. I sat down across from Ife on one of the couch chairs where we were originally playing cards earlier, and took in the atmosphere.
“Would you like something to drink?” Ife asked.
