Its a really tough and often financially unrewarding life, being a writer and as a writer myself, albeit unpublished, I know that I HAVE to write and that it takes alot out of me to write and no financial rewards will probably come my way out of it...
I come from a family of writers and its in my blood, I Love writing and so I can feel how challenging this is for you. You HAVE to write, you are a Writer and you write so well and about very important things and from your heart...
You face the challenges of being a black woman writing about your experiences which include being a lesbian and also about gender ideology, that goes against the mainstream and you have been cancelled by social media. People may see you as "fringe" and not relevant to them in their own narrow minded lives Or be interested in your perspective for a short while, for their own gain.
You have alot to contend with and yet you are still writing and still touching hearts with your writing. Thank you for persevering with it. You give so much of yourself in your writing and deserve to have many more subscribers.
I heard you on a podcast, can't remember which one, as I listen to so many and have a head that does not retain information. Do you see any increase in subscribers from speaking on podcasts?
There is a conference called FILIA in Brighton, UK in Oct that would have been an amazing platform for you to speak at or share your work.
We need more black women and women of colour to be heard and to take up more space in these white spaces, where the white woman has had endless space to speak her truths...
Sending you a big mama bear hug from across the water. 🤗💚
Aw, Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment, Louise. I’m really touched by your words and all the empathy and understanding you’ve conveyed about my journey 💜
I know that some writers make very good money from their work, so I know it is possible. I’ve seen writers on Substack with small, yet very supportive audiences, and writers with large audiences who earn a great living. As you know, there are just other factors aside from being a Writer that come into play here, and it has been disheartening.
When I speak on a podcast, I can expect about 1-3% of the total viewership on that video to become free subscribers, and maybe a few out of that pool will sign up for a paid tier. Same thing if one of my posts goes “viral” and gets thousands of views, which has happened on multiple occasions. It’s definitely helped me grow but it’s still a slow process.
I did reach out to FiLia last year, video-chatted with the founder, and they purchased my film to screen amongst their staff last year but they did not do a podcast interview.
As of now I’ve exhausted the gender-critical podcasts that intersect with my niche. I could have kept going; I was receiving more invitations…but I would just end up speaking to a predominantly white and/or conservative-leaning audiences.
A few very supportive and resonant women-readers have trickled in from all of that exposure, but it’s also overwhelming to attract such large numbers of people who don’t really SEE you, and are only here for narrow-minded interests. I don’t want to feel cornered and isolated on my own platform.
Although I am not earning as much as I’d like and/or deserve, I have increased my income on this platform overall since I started and it has helped. I think the biggest value-add from my platform growth was expanding my reach, making connections, and being more discoverable amongst more lesbian and bisexual women of color.
Hopefully this will aid me in creating and publishing my anthology, which I believe will be a wonderful culmination of my work in the gender-critical sphere.
Thank you for the mama bear hugs!!! Sending hugs back 🐻🌺❤️
Hey N3vlynnn. Thank you for your reply. It sounds really challenging to build up subscribers and as you say, a very slow process...
That's a real shame that FiLia did not do a podcast interview with you.
I really look forward to reading your anthology. Now you have your own space, hopefully, if the noisy neighbour issue had improved, you can crack on with creating and publishing your anthology and reach a wider audience.

Thank you, Cate. Sending so much love💜
How frustrating and disappointing for you. I wouldn’t ever have the commitment and courage to speak out like you do. Thank you for your work.
