I have exciting news! In honor of Black & Women’s History Months, I am hosting a Virtual Film Screening and Discussion of my award-winning documentary film, Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights.
Reflections Unheard is a feature-length documentary which focuses on black women’s marginalization between the Black Power and Feminist movements of the 1960s and 70s. It is the first and only film of its kind to focus exclusively on black women’s experiences and contributions during the Civil Rights era. You’re welcome to find more information about the film here.
I’ve posted all of the juicy event info below (including a raffle!).
But before I get into that...
Y’all…let me say a quick word about this film. Reflections Unheard has been my lifeboat for the past decade. Not only have I turned it into my primary source of income, and not only has it saved my ass time and time again…
It has reached far beyond my wildest imagination since its inception, screening in all the top Universities in the world (yes, every single one!), reaching diverse audiences, being taught in classrooms, housed in major libraries, and having been my golden ticket to visit new and interesting parts of the world.
I never thought that this film would earn me a single dime, or reach beyond the African-American community. I made this film because it needed to be made, and so that it could simply be available for women like me to witness our reflections accurately reflected in history. And it has been a fountain of knowledge and abundance, 10x over.
I’m proud and blessed to have been a vessel for this work, and to finally be able to share it with my audience.
I never host my own film screenings (anymore), and I have never hosted a virtual screening and discussion. (When my film came out, we were still using DVDs! remember those ancient relics?)…
But I have been wanting to for a while—especially to have the space to get real about my thoughts on the parallels between today’s women’s movement and that of the past.
I have a lot of beautiful, heartfelt, and spicy creations in store to share on my Blog over the next few months, one of which is a groundbreaking project I am working on, that offers black female civil rights history through a gender-critical lens.
I can’t say too much about it yet, but I will say this: I am currently on my way to Boston to research at the Harvard University Women’s History Library all next week (yay!!) and I will be sharing a bit of my personal process with that here, very soon.
In the meantime, I am happy to share the fruits of my prior research, in the form of my film, Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights. And I will be very excited to meet all of you on video to chat about the film, share my creative process, and answer any questions you may have.

This is so exciting! I’ve been wanting to watch your film since I learned about it, but my Timberland regional library doesn’t seem to have it? so I was a little bit stumped on how to do that as a non-college/non-group.
